Welcome to the

Shepherdstown Public Library!

The Shepherdstown Public Library was established in the historically rich Old Market House by the Shepherdstown Women's Club in 1922.  Our building, the most distinctive in Shepherdstown, is West Virginia's longest continuously occupied library building.

We are small, but extremely robust.  We share resources as part of a larger consortium of 9 libraries, and our interlibrary loan system extends throughout the entire state of West Virginia and beyond.  Our patrons frequently use our resource network to obtain those fiction and non-fiction works which might not be readily available in our current collection.  We also offer free use of a full range of audio books, e-books, periodicals, newspapers, and reference books.

Our computer network provides free internet access, and we are a designated wireless hotspot.  Our library patrons are able to access over 26 online databases, language-learning software and hundreds of online reference materials -- all free!  Copy, fax and notary services, as well as voter registration are also available.

 Our Mission

Our primary mission is to promote literacy and provide a valuable service to the community.  Our experienced staff and our dedicated volunteers and Board of Trustees are always available to serve you!  We are also pleased and proud to acknowledge our continuing affiliation with Friends of the Shepherdstown Library (FOSL), a local organization devoted to raising awareness and funding for the library.

One Card Does It All!

One card works at all public libraries in the tri-county area!  Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan Counties have all teamed up to make your life simpler.  A card from any one of nine libraries will work at all libraries and will allow you to:

  • Check out books, audio books, e-books and DVDs

  • View items checked out on your card from home

  • Access online electronic databases from the library, home or work

  • Renew books from library, home or work

  • Place books on hold from library, home or work

It's Easy to Join the Library!

Library cards are free!  You must be at least 5 years old and a resident of Jefferson, Berkeley or Morgan County, West Virginia.  Our nearby Maryland neighbors are eligible, as well.  Stop by with proof of residence and the name and phone number of a personal contact, and the Librarian will provide you with a library card in minutes!

  Above our library's entrance, marking

the second story is a painted sign that

  Independent Order of Odd Fellows,

  the All-Seeing Eye.  This image,

"enveloped in a blaze of light and glory,"

represents the eye of Omnipotence.  The

eye is resting on a book representing

  the power of knowledge and

information to be found within a library.
