JUST FOR KIDS

Summer 2010 Reading Spectacular! Click here!

The role of the children's department of the Shepherdstown Public Library is to provide a "Children's Gateway to Learning." In this spirit, the SPL children's library maintains a close relationship with the schools and provides the following services to the children of our community:

Regular Story Hours/Library Visits:

  • Beginning in September and January our library offers a weekly story time for each of these groups: "LapBabies," "Wonderful Ones," "Time for Twos," and "Threes, Fours and Fives."
  • Our "Fantastic Readers" group is for 8 to 12 year olds.
  • Weekly after-school story hour and crafts are for students 6-12 years of age
  • Story hours and visits are provided for the Shepherdstown Day Care Center, the Shepherd University Nursery School and TLC Montessori.
  • Regular visits are provided for Morgan Academy, grades 1-8

Summer Program
Every Summer, the library provides a summer reading program. The theme is different every year, and has included multi-cultural, history, science, and community leader themes. Each week features a different program related to the theme. The participating children read a certain number of books in order to earn prizes. These prizes are donated by community businesses, the Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation, the Shelley A. Marshall Foundation and The Friends of the Shepherdstown Library (FOSL).

Miscellaneous Visits
The library welcomes visits from homeschoolers, scout troops, Project Excel, Shepherdstown Elementary School first grades, and field trips from other schools.

With FOSL support, the Library brings in professional storytellers whose performances are provided to the public free of charge.

The library also serves the many elementary, junior high, and high school students who come in search of reference materials for writing contests, science fairs, social studies fairs, and classroom reports. These children have access not only to our collection, but to interlibrary loan and Internet resources as well. The children's department is also frequently used by Shepherd University students in the field of education.
